About Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival

Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival is a small town festival with a big  reputation! Each year, music lovers flock to this distinct UNESCO World  Heritage town for the best of Folk music and a healthy dose of fun.  We’re the longest running music festival in Nova Scotia and one of the  oldest in Canada. This all-ages event takes place over four days in  early August and offers something for everyone.

Our indoor and outdoor venues are small, intimate and steeped in  history! They offer seating and are within walking distance of each  other. Musicians playing on our Wharf Stage are often accompanied by the  songs of seagulls and fresh sea breezes to complete the Folk Harbour  experience. Between shows, enjoy the numerous galleries, museums, shops,  homemade ice cream, pubs and restaurants that make our colourful town  so rich—with so much to do you’ll wish our festival were longer!

We’re more than just music performances! We showcase music and dance  from a wide range of cultures. Canadian and International artists are  featured in educational workshops and pre-festival conferences. These  work to promote the preservation of traditional folk music through an  emphasis on acoustic instrumentation and A cappella singing. We also  place a special focus on the next generation of Folk artists, with  scholarships and Young Folks concerts, where we get to show off some of  our amazing local youth in action.

Our audiences are attentive, not rowdy—they love music more than  anything and faithfully return each year! Guests are invited to  participate and interact with the artists so get your cameras ready;  you’ll have plenty of photo ops!

Our main venues are all alcohol-free, providing a comfortable all-ages environment for concert-goers.

Over the years we’ve presented hundreds of musicians from across  Canada, The United States, and beyond, and we’ve made a name as one of  this country’s leading music festivals. Our fans consistently tell us  they come to our festival to see their favourite musicians, but leave  having discovered new “musical addictions”. Performers love us too. They  tell us that our audiences are gracious and fully engaged—quite a  compliment coming from artists who, in many cases, have played all over  the world.

Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival is truly an intimate affair and a  vibrant East Coast experience—a chance to get up close and personal with  the artists who sing the songs that influence and shape our culture.

We are not always able to provide  dedicated parking for our mobility-restricted guests but we make every  effort possible to accommodate them where/when we can.

At the Main Stage tent, we have 5 spaces  reserved for vehicles with handicapped permits just outside the main  entrance to the grounds.  Once they are full, the attendant will allow  permitted vehicles to drop passengers off at the entrance, but the  vehicle must park off-grounds.

The St. John’s Church venue allows  vehicles to drop off mobility restricted passengers at the front door on  the widened sidewalk, but you can not park there.

There are a few parking spots reserved  for those with handicapped permits throughout Lunenburg, but keep in  mind they have not been made available to Folk Harbour guests, even if  they are close to our venues.

The Main Stage is at 11 Blockhouse Hill Road, in Old Town Lunenburg.  You can see a map of our festival grounds here.

The only venue where dogs are permitted is the Lunenburg Heritage Bandstand.

Dogs are not permitted inside any of our  venues including the Wharf Stage—no exceptions other than licensed and  identified service dogs.

August temperatures can be hot and we have zero tolerance for pets or children left unattended in parked cars. We will call the RCMP to rescue any pet or child left alone in a vehicle.

We encourage families of all sizes and  make-ups to become part of our festival family! Children 12 and under  are admitted to all performances free of charge. If an event is sold  out, we cannot guarantee seating inside the venue.

We have one workshop specifically for young musicians, the  Val Meister Young Fiddlers Workshop; in addition, we welcome  participants of any age at our morning vocal and dancing workshops

Mothers are welcome to breastfeed at any  festival venue. If a mother requires a private space, she is welcome to  use the Folk Harbour Office at 125 Montague Street during office hours  (9am– 8pm).

Otherwise, she is encouraged to ask a volunteer for  assistance in finding a suitable location.

At this time, we do not offer a Family Admittance Pass to the festival or any festival events.

The Folk Harbour Festival does not have a beer or wine  tent—most of our venues are alcohol and smoke free, including the Main  Stage tent.

If you find an item and cannot locate its  owner, please bring it to the lost and found box inside the Folk  Harbour Society office at 125 Montague Street during our Festival office  hours (9 am – 8 pm).

Our office is also equipped with a basic  first aid kit, but for serious injuries we recommend calling 911  immediately. EHS has been alerted to our needs and will have a visible  presence whenever possible, but they do have a large area to service.

We are a green festival and strive to be as environmentally sustainable as possible. As a rule, we (and our vendors) do not sell bottled water but we do provide fresh water dispensers just inside the Main Stage box office. We encourage you bring  your own water bottle that can be refilled at one of our stations.

Guests are also encouraged to bring travel mugs to refill with hot beverages, further helping us reduce  waste produced by our festival.

Since the weather can unexpectedly change during the  day, it is always wise to bring the following with you: sunscreen, small  umbrella, layers of clothing (the evenings can get cool), a seat  cushion, and comfortable walking shoes!

All of our venues offer seating, however we recommend bringing a seat cushion or you can purchase one from our concession  tents. The Sunday morning Gospel concert has overflow seating in the field and is often well attended, you may choose to bring a chair just  in case.

We are not in a position to offer  exchange rates for foreign currency. We encourage you to use Canadian  money or foreign currency credit or debit cards, for which we cover the  fees. We accept MasterCard, Visa and debit; and Ticketpro accepts  American Express.

We cannot accept any cash currencies other than $CAD and $USD. American cash dollars will be accepted at par.

We encourage you to visit our friends at TD Bank for assistance with any currency conversions that you may require.

There are several banks in Downtown Lunenburg, all with  automatic tellers.  For in-person banking services, the TD Bank at 36  King Street, is open Monday to Friday from 8 am until 6 pm.  No bank in  Lunenburg is open Saturday or Sunday, but the automatic tellers are  available 24/7.

Well, we plan to not have rain!

Rain has never resulted in cancellation of a Main Stage event. Our tent is modern and weather tight!

Heavy rains may restrict overflow seating outside the tent requiring us to restrict attendance of the Sunday Gospel concert.

In case of stormy weather, rain venues are provided for our outdoor venues. The Wharf Stage moves to the Zwicker Wharf Building and the Lunenburg Bandstand moves to St. John’s Parish Hall. We’ve  literally got you covered!

History of Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival

From Tom Sheppard: “Folk Harbour: The First 25 Years of the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival”

The group of individuals who would  eventually start the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival met under a series  of coincidences and over time the idea of a festival similar to that in  Gloucester, Massachusetts was formulated. Gloucester and Lunenburg have a  long history of co-operation and competition, especially in the  schooner- and dory-fishing days. This is still played out in an annual  series of dory races.

The original thought was that this would become a  music festival celebrating and promoting British, Irish and Scottish  folk music the scope certainly has grown since then. Jim Pittman’s  vision, according to Bill Plaskett, was that “there would be a festival  where fishing boats from all across the Atlantic would fill the harbour.  Lunenburg would be at the centre of this new geographical area, not  restricted by political boundaries”.

John Houston pictured this on a map  that he doodled one day, showing “more courses across the oceans than  pathways over the land. Folk Harbour can only be found on such a map. It  is situated at the head of the bay that is the Great North Atlantic  Ocean….. People would come to the head of the bay, this little place  called Lunenburg, and it would be Folk Harbour. Everybody would be at  home there.”

Formation of the Festival and Society:

The Certificate of Incorporation  for the LFHS from the Province’s Societies Act was signed on May 30,  1986. There were several serious music-lovers who energized the early  days of the Society and who created the first Festival in 1986. Ron  Kelly, a one- time Hollywood movie maker, who stayed in town after he  completed his film in Lunenburg, agreed to chair the newly-evolving  group of traditional or folk music enthusiasts. He led us through our  early meetings at which several people agreed to be on the first  Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival Committee.

The founding group included Bill Plaskett, Alma Houston and her son  John Houston, Dorothy Read, Val Meister, Ken Matheson and Jim Pittman,  who preferred to be a worker and remained off the organizing committee. By all accounts, Alma was the fire that kept this idea burning. She  provided business direction to the fledgling organization and had the  most to do with getting our getting organized properly.

Other early  volunteers included Earl Meister, who took over many site  responsibilities such as sound, chairs, tents and food vendors. As with  many volunteer organizations, turnover was a problem. However, we didn’t  expect that our leader would resign before the first opening day!

We  managed to work together to pull it off. We were all filled with energy  and willing to do whatever was necessary to make things work out, all  the while unknowingly learning how it was done so that we were able to  repeat it the following year and many years since.

These individuals formed the first Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society  Board of Directors: Bill Plaskett, President; John Houston, Vice  President, Rosemary Richards, Treasurer; Earl Meister, Secretary. The  Festival Committee was, at that time, separate and had as its Chairman,  Ken Matheson, who was a witness to the Certificate of Incorporation.

Ken  ran the first 10 Festivals and the Ken Matheson Program for local  performers is named in his honour. He was assisted by these volunteers:  Program Committee: Val Meister and John Houston; Site: Chris Anderson  and Earl Meister; Finance: the Houstons, Ken Matheson and Rosemary  Richards; Fundraising: the Houstons and Roger Pike.

Val Meister and John Houston were the all-important Program Committee  for many years. Of all of the founders, Val is the only one still  involved and contributes through the Young Fiddler’s Workshop that is  presented in her name annually. Over the years Val set up the billeting  system to house our performers and acted as Education Chair. John, after  many years being involved with the festival, has now spent more and  more time on his movie productions in Halifax and the Far North.

Bill Plaskett has, after his initial years of intense participation in many aspects of the festival, returned several times as a performer  including appearances with his son Joel. Jim Pittman was a man of many  ideas and endless enthusiasm in forming this festival and along with  Bill is one of the two real founders who urged us all on.
